Setting Up Subdomains in DirectAdmin

Introduction

Subdomains are a useful feature for organizing your website's content and functionalities. Whether you want to create a blog, a forum, or a staging environment, setting up a subdomain is a straightforward process in DirectAdmin. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to create, manage, and remove subdomains in DirectAdmin.

Table of Contents

Creating a Subdomain

Steps:

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin: Access your DirectAdmin control panel.
  2. Navigate to Account Manager: Look for the "Account Manager" icon and click on it.
  3. Access Subdomain Management: Click on the "Subdomain Management" link.
  4. Add Subdomain: Click on the "Add Subdomain" button, enter your desired subdomain name, and press "Add Subdomain" again.
Note: It may take up to five minutes for a new subdomain to become active.

Uploading to a Subdomain

  • Each subdomain appears in public_html/subdomain-name. This means you can also access your subdomain at http://www.yourdomain.com/subdomain-name.
  • You can upload files to a subdomain folder using FTP, FileZilla, or File Manager.

Removing a Subdomain

Steps:

  1. Navigate to Subdomain Management: As before, go to "Account Manager" and then "Subdomain Management."
  2. Select and Delete: Place a check next to the subdomain(s) you want to delete and click the "Delete" button.
  3. Remove Directory Content: If you want to delete the subdomain's files, check the "Remove Directory Content" box.
Note: If you don't check the box, the subdomain will stop working, but the files and directory will remain intact.

Subdomain Statistics

  • Beside each subdomain name is a "Stats" link that will load Webalizer statistics.
  • The "Usage Log" and "Error Log" links will take you to text versions of each log file.
Note: Your subdomain must have some traffic and be more than one day old for the "Stats" link to work.

Creating FTP Users for Individual Subdomains

  1. Create the Subdomain: If you haven't done so already.
  2. Navigate to FTP Management: From the main control panel menu in "Account Manager," click the "FTP Management" link.
  3. Create FTP Account: Click the "Create FTP Account" button and fill in the required fields.
Note: To restrict an FTP account to a single subdomain, enter the subdomain name (without .yourdomain.com) in the "FTP Username" field.
